Stability Chair

Stability Chair - open-source assistive technology working model by the The Center for Discovery community

The challenge

This project addresses a critical safety gap by providing a durable, low-cost chair that is difficult to tip, supports posture and movement, and improves safety for sensory-seeking users in everyday settings.

Who it helps

Children and adolescents with sensory-seeking behaviors, particularly rocking or active movement patterns, who need a highly stable chair that reduces tipping risk and supports safer seating.

How it works

The Stability Chair reduces tipping and tripping risks, supports proper posture, and accommodates movement. Its adaptable design provides individualized support, improving safety, comfort, and independence while lessening the need for close supervision.

Students and individuals with low muscle tone, decreased postural endurance, and sensory or movement needs (e.g., rocking) who require increased support and safety while seated in educational and residential settings.
