Travel Buddy

Travel Buddy - open-source assistive technology prototype by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

This project helps a manual handcycle user to travel with together with his/her kids anywhere he/she goes. Its something a parent without the disability takes for granted, but is really difficult for manual handcycle and wheelchair users.

Who it helps

Eyayu is a father of 3. He uses a manual handcycle to go to work, shops or anywhere he goes. He is sad that he is unable to take his kids to/from school because he couldn't travel with them, on public transport which they use, but is not suitable for him.

How it works

The chair is made from materials like wood, foam and a metal frame that would be bolted to the main frame of the manual handcycle. Bolting the chair means attaching it, without altering the wheelchair in any way and to remove it easily if not needed.

A chair that could be attached to the back of a manual handcycle would allow a kid to seat and travel with the user. The chair would have features like a seat belt and a stair to help kids reach the chair.
