Anna

Anna - open-source assistive technology concept by the Leffell School community

About this project

The team’s goal was to help her be more independent during her day to day life by designing various projects that can help her move easier. They designed a gooseneck cup holder to make it easier for her to drink without assistance from family. The gooseneck is attached to her wheelchair and is malleable enough for her to be able to move it

She also has difficulty using a traditional computer mouse so they designed a system for her to be able to click on the mouse easier. They created a mouse pad with wheels attached to the mouse which, combined with increased sensitivity on her computer, allows her to more easily control the mouse without moving her arms as much.

The last thing they fabricated was a larger tray for her wheelchair. Beforehand, she had a very small tray that wasn’t able to hold much weight. They made a much larger and stronger tray out of acrylic glass.

The challenge

She uses a wheelchair to get from place to place; however, day to day tasks remain difficult for her. She currently needs assistance drinking so the gooseneck will make it easier for her and her family.

Who it helps

Anna is an adult in Westchester with Multiple Sclerosis so she has trouble controlling her arms and legs. She has an extreme sweet tooth, especially for milk chocolate!
