Giuliana

Giuliana - open-source assistive technology concept by the Leffell School community

About this project

The team wanted to help Giuliana open doors around her college more easily. To accomplish this, they designed a PVC rod with a bullet-catch release-system and a hook on the end that can latch around door handles. Giuliana can extend the rod, use it to lower the door handle, move back with her wheelchair to open the door, and then go through! This device aims to give her more independence and mobility throughout her day.

The challenge

Giuliana moves around in an electric wheelchair and has limited strength and motion in her arms and hands. As a result, she struggles to open doors that are not handicapped accessible.

Who it helps

Giuliana is an adult in Eastchester with Cerebral Palsy. She loves murder mysteries!
