Blade Lock

Blade Lock - open-source assistive technology prototype by the SCE community

The challenge

BLADE LOCK is needed because many people with physical disabilities or limited hand function struggle to safely perform basic kitchen tasks that most people take for granted. Simple actions such as holding, stabilizing, and applying force to kitchen knifes

Who it helps

For BLADE LOCK, the target users are individuals with limited hand mobility, reduced grip strength, neurological conditions, muscular disorders, injuries, or other physical disabilities that make it difficult to safely hold and control a kitchen knife.

How it works

BLADE LOCK solves this challenge by attaching the knife to a wearable hand support, removing the need for active gripping and allowing users with limited hand function to safely and independently cut food.

The idea behind BLADE LOCK was to develop a wearable device that fits on the hand and removes the need for active knife gripping, enabling people with limited hand function to safely cut food independently.
