Foon: a Freedom Spoon to Prevent Spills

Foon: a Freedom Spoon to Prevent Spills - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Washington University in St. Louis community

The challenge

Due to cerebral palsy, Drew finds it difficult to handle utensils without spilling, leading to discomforts when eating in public. A large population face this issue, but there exists a need for accessible and affordable solutions with high functionality.

Who it helps

Potential users are individuals with limited motor control, including those with tremors and involuntary movements of the hand, low dexterity, and reduced muscle strength, who have difficulties with handling utensils.

How it works

The side-to-side pivot stabilizes the spoon during hand tremors, keeping it level and reducing spills, while the large handle improves grip for better control and independent eating.

An adaptive utensil with a side-to-side pivoting spoon head that stabilizes during hand tremors, reducing spills and improving independent eating.
