Canoe Support System

Canoe Support System - open-source assistive technology working model by the Georgia Tech community

About this project

Canoeable is an attachable, durable, and adjustable canoe seat created to secure physically disabled camp-goers so they can have a safe, inclusive, and comfortable canoeing experience.

The challenge

Oftentimes, it is difficult to maintain balance when getting in and out of a canoe. The tendency of a canoe to tip over makes it dangerous for some campers to use. However, because the added support would create a heavier system and therefore a harder to move system, it is important that the support structure be removable for campers that do not require it.

Who it helps

Camp Twin Lakes has delivered fully adaptive, medically supportive, and deeply impactful camp experiences to more than 10,000 of Georgia’s children and young adults, helping each camper grow in their confidence and experience the joys of childhood. Today, CTL serves thousands of campers through year-round programming at our fully-accessible facility
