CODAssistant - Communication Assistant for Deaf People

CODAssistant - Communication Assistant for Deaf People - open-source assistive technology working model by the Sabancı University community

The challenge

According to laws, in Turkey, there has to be at least one sign language interpreter in each hospital. However, unfortunately there is not. Therefore, deaf people face with serious communication problems in healthcare system.

Who it helps

Serkan Ural is a sign language teacher. He is also a hearing impaired individual. He contributes to the spread of sign language by giving sign language lessons at universities, institutions and associations.

How it works

Most of the deaf people in Turkey cannot read and write. Thanks to codassistant, deaf people will easily describe their health problems by using symbols for body parts and symptoms without the need for writing. The communication barrier will be removed.

Codassistant is a mobile app designed for deaf people. Basically it is a virtual communication assistant. In hospitals, deaf people can easily select their symptoms and tell the symptoms to hospital personal by audial and visual translation.
