This is a Counter-Grip End Unit that connects to the TOM Parametric Arm Prosthesis designed to help hold vegetables, bread and other food in place, acting as a counterforce to a knife or other kitchen utensil.
Arm amputees face multiple challenges when attempting to work in the kitchen, mainly because they cannot use two hands to hold the food they wish to prepare. This poses both operative and safety challenges when using knives and other kitchen tools.
This project was designed and developed with two Need Knowers, Ester and Shula. Both women are below-the-elbow amputees who hoped to achieve greater independence in the kitchen.

The Counter-Grip End Unit provides support and counter pressure that holds objects in place, replacing the missing hand and fingers. It enables actions that require two hands in the kitchen such as cutting vegetables and bread and performing other kitchen duties.
This solution combines 3D printed and laser cut parts to create an end unit that clicks into place on the TOM Parametric Arm Prosthesis.
