FlipPad - Assistive Gaming Touchpad

FlipPad - Assistive Gaming Touchpad - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Abraham Accords Open Innovation Challenge community

About this project

The FlipPad combines a low-cost capacitive touchpad module with a microcontroller and sensors. It can control computers via USB, smartphones via Bluetooth, and even TV sets/other devices via infrared - just by small fingertip movements.

The challenge

The FlipPad was developed during the 2022 Abraham Accords Open Innovation Challenge.

It was designed with and for Felix Pell who lives with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, SMA Type 3. This solution enables Felix to use computers and smartphones in his wheelchair and with limited finger mobility.

Who it helps

Felix is a passionate computer gamer who loves nature and Marvel

movies. Due to his disability (Spinal Muscular Atrophy, SMA Type 3)

he can only move his fingers a little bit. It is very important for him

that he can use computers and smartphones.

How it works

What

Why

Although many alternative input devices are available today, none of those can be fully tailored to individual capabilities or give access to different devices. We want to fill this gap by providing a low-cost, flexible, and open-source input solution.

Who

Felix is a passionate computer gamer who loves nature and Marvel movies. Due to his disability (Spinal Muscular Atrophy, SMA Type 3), Felix has only very limited finger mobility, however, it is very important for him to still be able to use computers and smartphones.

How

Together with Felix, we developed a special touchpad that can be mounted easily on a wheelchair or tabletop. Using the accessible Configuration Manager, settings can be adjusted together with Need Knowers, making the system customizable for any user.
