Food tray

About this project

This device was meant to increase the ease of movement for Kristi during eating times for a dining facility with uniform trays. The end user uses a walker throughout the day for walking assistance and the goal for this device was to be attached to the walker throughout the day but not impede mobility.

The challenge

This project was started at a TOM Makeathon in 2018 and this version was an improvement made during the TOM Makeathon in 2019. The design last year was very good at first, but succumbed to the repeated stresses placed on it by normal use. In this design, we attempted to increase the long-term durability of the device by including a base washer to distribute the pressure of a full tray on the plastic and increase the perpendicular support so that the tray would remain level without deforming under load.

Who it helps

Kristi is a Vanderbilt Next Steps student. She uses a walker throughout the day for walking assistance and the goal for this device was to be attached to the walker throughout the day but not impede mobility.
