Luxsonic and Hapsonic - Portable Signaling System

Luxsonic and Hapsonic - Portable Signaling System - open-source assistive technology working model by the Abraham Accords Open Innovation Challenge community

About this project

This solution is a cap with LEDs surrounding the base or a vibrating necklace. The LEDs or vibration elements are activated using sensors that, when switched on, calibrate to the user’s surroundings to signal differing sounds.

The challenge

The Luxsonic and Hapsonic - Portable Signaling System was developed during the 2022 Abraham Accords Open Innovation Challenge.

It was designed with and for Zhanara Bekturganova, who lost her hearing at age 7. This solution enables Zhanara to know from where significant sounds in her environment originate so she can react properly.

Who it helps

Zhanara lost her hearing because of a sudden illness when she was 7 years old. She is now married with 2 children, a 4-year-old boy, and a 9-month-old baby.

How it works

What

A cap with LEDs surrounding the base or a vibrating necklace. The LEDs or vibration elements are activated using sensors that, when switched on, calibrate to the user’s surroundings to signal differing sounds.

Why

Although there are modern signaling systems connected to mobile devices which recognize sounds, they do not indicate the direction(s) from which sounds originate. This leaves a need gap in the market because especially in areas such as the outdoors in a big city, it is often important to be able to react quickly to klaxon, siren signaling, or screams.

Who

How

The devices show the direction of sharp or loud sounds to react faster to a danger. They adapt when turned on and show sounds different from the average (green light - a little, yellow - enough, red – much in Luxsonic or vibration level in Hapsonic).

Tools Needed

Soldering iron + solder

Hot glue gun

Digital multimeter

Scissors

Sewing needles

Arduino
