Masks for Autism

The challenge

To create a mask that is tolerable to individuals on the autism spectrum. A mask that is waterproof on the inside will prevent discomfort due to mouthing and encourage longer wear.

Who it helps

A group of students on the autism spectrum with behaviors such as eloping or mouthing non-edible items. They have profound deficits due to autism spectrum disorder which are often paired with other disabilities such as cerebral palsy, GI problems and several others. Students tend to begin sucking and licking the mask after about 30 minutes of wear, resulting in a wet, uncomfortable mask.
