Masks for Neuromuscular Disease

Masks for Neuromuscular Disease - open-source assistive technology concept by the University of Pennsylvania community

About this project

Alternative mask design that allows for enhanced breathing for individuals that express concern in breathing with the typical surgical masks.

The challenge

The need knower, along with individuals in her Neuromuscular Disease group, has expressed that it is difficult to breathe while wearing a typical mask. These individuals are at high-risk and are constantly in the presence of various hospitals, doctors, nurses, etc. Therefore, they are in need of an alternative solution to enable them to receive the proper care in the safest environment during this difficult time.

Who it helps

The need knower has a neuromuscular disease similar to MS. She is in a full-time wheelchair and unfortunately has very limited range of motion. Additionally, she has difficultly breathing and has the tendency to pass out when wearing the typical surgical masks.
