Pre-Cane (Adaptive Mobility Device)

Pre-Cane (Adaptive Mobility Device) - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Vanderbilt University community

The challenge

A pre-cane/adaptive mobility device may be needed in Orientation and Mobility (O&M) when an individual, often a young child, is not developmentally ready or physically able to use a long cane safely and effectively.

Who it helps

The device is intended to be built and used by a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) for O&M training. A COMS is a trained professional who teaches individuals who are blind or visually impaired how to travel safely and independently.

How it works

This device can be easily built by a COMS for use with their students in exploring early independent mobility.

This pre-cane helps to provide stability and encourages environmental exploration and spatial awareness. The device features an optional handle for adult assistance as well as optional auditory/tactile feedback for the user.

Tools needed

Protective glasses

Measurement tool

Pvc pipe cutter

Dremel
