Adaptive Hair Straightener

Adaptive Hair Straightener - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Shepherd Center community

The challenge

The Shepherd Center strives to increase patients' independence when performing activities of daily living such as straightening hair.

Who it helps

Intended users of this Hair Straightener are individuals with limited hand dexterity. This could lead to difficulty holding and pinching items like a hair straightener.

How it works

The Adaptive Hair Straightener limits the need for fine motor movements when straightening hair. The hair straightener is instead controlled by the user flexing their wrist.

The Adaptive Hair Straightener is a 3D printed device made of eight PETG parts, a hair straightener, and various hardware.

Tools needed

PC or MAC I7 +

Fusion 360

Prusa slicer
