UnlockAbility: Modular Locker Accessibility Tool

UnlockAbility: Modular Locker Accessibility Tool - open-source assistive technology concept by the Northwestern University community

The challenge

At Keshet, students with disabilities are unable to independently open lockers due to the required force, range of motion, and/or motor skills. In order to increase independence and reduce this barrier to accessibility, a solution is needed.

Who it helps

On a local scale, this solution was designed for K-8 students with varying disabilities, most commonly autism. More broadly, it can benefit people of many ages who struggle to use lockers or latch operated items across settings: school, gym, work, and more

How it works

There is a clear market gap for locker accessibility solutions, limiting the independence of countless individuals with disabilities. Our solution increases locker accessibility for a wide range of users within the disability community.

We designed two attachment systems (for different locker types) with user-intuitive modular accessories that allow customization to the user's size and preference. The systems are sturdy yet removable, making them suitable for public spaces.
