All-Terrain Wheelchair Step

All-Terrain Wheelchair Step - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Vanderbilt University community

The challenge

Stella cannot transfer into her all-terrain wheelchair independently because the distance between the footplate and the seat is too far. Stella needed an intermediate step to allow her to get into the wheelchair more easily.

Who it helps

Stella is an 8-year-old with spina bifida. She loves exploring new places and meeting new people. She uses a manual wheelchair to get around. When she goes on hikes, she uses the Grit Jr. all-terrain wheelchair.

How it works

Stella is able to independently attach, detach, and use this step. The solution allows Stella to transfer from the ground into her all-terrain wheelchair independently!

The solution is a small step that clips onto the center bar. The step is outdoor-proof and cushioned. It bypasses the footplate, giving Stella a sturdy, intermediate step to get into her all-terrain wheelchair.
