Splash Pad Wheelchair

Splash Pad Wheelchair - open-source assistive technology concept by the Vanderbilt University community

The challenge

Hadley is an 11-year-old with a rare hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (Type 6B). Before the Makethon, her wheelchair’s electronics made it impossible to enjoy water activities, meaning her dad had to carry her to experience the fun of a splash pad.

Who it helps

Any wheelchair user looking to experience a water based activity or the beach.

How it works

This solution allows Hadley Jo to explore water based environments for longer.

We created a waterproof wheelchair to allow Hadley to explore a beach or splash pad for longer. We included a seatbelt for safety and made it her favorite color (pink!).
