Automatic Grabber

Automatic Grabber - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Vanderbilt University community

The challenge

Deklan often struggles with items in his way as he wheels around the house. Traditional grabbers are difficult for him to use and cause him to fatigue quickly. This grabber allowed Deklan to be more independent and even participate in his first egg hunt!

Who it helps

Some of the potential users of this product is anyone with low muscle tone, muscular dystrophy, wheelchair users, and anyone with reduced hand control.

How it works

This grabber will allow Deklan to independently pick things up that he otherwise could not access while in his wheelchair while also reducing fatigue and muscle dystrophy.

We are creating a switch powered automatic grabber. An automatic grabber can help Deklan do everything from participating in an Easter egg hunt for the first time to clearing his path on a daily basis, giving him more independence.
