Sleeping Brace

Sleeping Brace - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Vanderbilt University community

The challenge

Kenny feels constant pain due to the tension in his fingers, especially when resting. Previous braces have not fit well and have been difficult to secure. We hope that by designing a more user-friendly brace for his right hand, his pain will be reduced.

Who it helps

Kenny experiences neuropathy in both his hands. He is unable to use his hands to perform daily tasks. He possesses limited control of his right thumb and lacks touch sensation in both hands. His fingers are permanently curled, which causes pain at night.

How it works

This hand brace, which users can put on without external assistance, will allow them to improve the flexibility of their fingers, and provide them with more comfort while they rest.

We are creating a hand brace that users can adjust as needed and wear while they sleep to reduce tension in their fingers and hopefully provide long term pain relief.
