Fast-Hands is a wheelchair push-rim attachment which allows wheelchair athletes more control of in the speed, steering, and braking of their wheelchair, while also being gentle on their joints and arm muscles, as well as being safer on their hands.
This project is needed because the current push-rims on wheelchairs require a pulling motion that is very strenuous on the user's arms and wrists, thus making wheelchair usage hard for quadriplegics like John. Fast-Hands allow speed, steering, and braking.
John Martin is a C7/8 quadriplegic and an enthusiastic badminton player. After a motor vehicle accident, John suffers from spinal paralysis and has limited function in his arms, hand spasms, and weakened breathing. John still trains to play badminton.
This solution will address the challenge because it ensures that wheelchair athletes with muscle impairments, limited hand function, etc. can train and qualify to participate in sports like wheelchair badminton during the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
