Bilateral Activity Table – Enabling Two-Handed Access

Bilateral Activity Table – Enabling Two-Handed Access - open-source assistive technology prototype by the TOM@Care community

About this project

A custom-made, height-adjustable floor table with a semi-circular cutout, designed to bring the surface close to the body and support two-handed access for children with upper-limb differences.

The challenge

Children with limb differences often struggle to access standard tables. This solution provides a low, adaptive surface that supports two-handed use, enabling play, learning, and therapy that would otherwise be out of reach.

Who it helps

Designed for children with upper-limb differences, this solution also supports occupational therapists and families seeking to promote two-handed engagement, play, and independence in daily routines.

Children with limb differences often struggle to access.

How it works

Designed for children with upper-limb differences, this solution also supports occupational therapists and families seeking to promote two-handed engagement, play, and independence in daily routines. Children with limb differences often struggle to access.

By bringing the tabletop closer to the torso and adjusting height per side, the table enables stable, comfortable use of both arms—supporting bilateral activity, improved reach, and greater independence during play and therapy.
