CommutingApp - open-source assistive technology challenge by the Singapore community

The challenge

Create a product to assist persons with Down syndrome (15 years old and above)

in commuting from point A to point B with the following ability:

• Narration function (English only) to speak out names of train stations and bus stops

• Correctly and accurately narrate out the remaining stops left in the journey to the

proposed destination

• Ease of use with downloadabilty to smartphones as the main interface for usage

of the product

• Visuals to help navigate the various app functions.

Who it helps

A daily struggle faced by persons with Down syndrome is the availability of

adapted tech to enable their independent travelling. With this skill supported,

the individual could gain access to employment, service centres, enlarge

social inclusion space and restore dignity.
