Ej Bionics

Ej Bionics - open-source assistive technology working model by the 2021 TOM Global Innovation Challenge (GIC) community

About this project

A reliable bionic hand mechanism that could be attached to the

stump of the amputated arm and allows Mr. Mekasha to hold a

brush at work.

It could be built from locally available materials and machines at

BIT Maker space.

The bionic hand will help improve Mr. Mekasha’s performance at

his daily work as a furniture painter by allowing him to hold a

brush in place of the missing hand. The brush will be easily

removable so as to change between different types easily.

Who it helps

Our Need-Knower is a 58 year old painter Mr. Mekasha Zemene.

He is the head of a family of five members, including his three

daughters. He is a right hand amputee and makes a living as a

painter at a local wood furniture shop.

Negative impacts of a missing limb could be seen from the story

of our Need-Knower Mr. Mekasha. He had to endure social,

psychological and economical disadvantages because of his

amputation. Simple daily tasks are a challenge for him.
