Free2Pee

Free2Pee - open-source assistive technology concept by the Bay Area community

About this project

Makers designed a sling to help transfer and use the toilet. The person is lifted off the wheelchair on a sling with a hole in it. They then move in a channel to transfer the pee into the toilet.

The challenge

Women with disabilities, like all women, need to pee. But wheelchairs are designed as if the female and male bodies are the same. Disabled males don’t need to transfer out of their wheelchairs to pee, but women and girls do, which is difficult to do independently. Power wheelchairs don’t have a feature that makes it easier for people who can't get out of their wheelchairs to pee. Many women with power wheelchairs don’t work only because there is no easy way for them to use the bathroom.

Who it helps

The need knowers are female wheelchair users.
