How can we protect the healthcare personnel?

How can we protect the healthcare personnel? - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Medellín community

About this project

After having investigated and analyzed the possible sources of contagion for health personnel, the EscafMED project team has leaned towards developing a diving suit used by medical personnel in intensive care units to prevent COVID-19 contagion, since this is the place where they take the patient in the most critical stage of the disease. It is a closed and very small area (15 m2), in which the health personnel remains caring for the patient more than the time necessary to be infected, obtaining a high probability of acquiring intra-hospital infections, also generating high levels of stress at the personal, social and family level; because it can be frowned upon as a source of contagion since when accessing this space, direct contact is made with the virus in its most aggressive and fatal stage. After having a broad vision of the spaces and problems faced by health personnel within hospitals and clinics when caring for patients with positive results for COVID19, the team that today presents EscafMED led by Julián Andrés Zuñiga and Andrés Torres launched into the challenge of creating this prototype, a technological innovation that seeks to prevent the spread of COVID19 in medical personnel who enter the ICU, without leaving aside a design that generates greater comfort for those who use it. So far, facial protection designs that have a good virus macromolecule filter generate facial discomfort.

The challenge

These people that are willing to risk their lives to save ours deserve all our support. With this challenge, we aim to develop ways to protect this key demographic in the repairing of the world from the virus.

Who it helps

Healthcare personnel, their families and everyone
