Hugh - Adaptable Computer Mouse

Hugh - Adaptable Computer Mouse - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Vanderbilt University community

The challenge

Since he doesn’t have thumbs, Hugh mainly uses his pinky fingers. However, this means that a normal computer mouse is not very practical for him. He can either move the mouse or click on it, but cannot do both at the same time.

Who it helps

Hugh Lang is a 7 year-old boy with clubbed arms, four fingers on his right hand, and three fingers on his left hand.

How it works

By separating the buttons from the mouse, this design presents a two-handed system. Hugh will be able to press the buttons and move the mouse simultaneously.

The solution is a redesign of a traditional mouse that consists of a mouse for cursor movement and a box that has three buttons on it, one for right-clicking, one for left-clicking, and one for scrolling. This system uses USB to connect to any computer.
