Piano Pal - Stabilizing Arm Support for Playing the Piano

Piano Pal - Stabilizing Arm Support for Playing the Piano - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Vanderbilt University community

The challenge

Beverly had a partial amputation in her left hand due to blood clots and has trouble controlling the right side of her body after suffering from a stroke. She loved playing the piano before her accidents, and she wants to be able to play again.

Who it helps

This device is designed for individuals with arm weakness or reduced motor control. It provides support and stability, allowing users to focus on playing the piano without the added strain of controlling arm movement.

How it works

This solution will provide strength support, prevent hand tremors from impacting piano play, and allow for easy arm movement.

Our solution is a customized table that fits in front of a piano to provide arm support. The arm is strapped into a rolling ergonomic support cushion that slides efficiently to allow easy access to all of the keys on the right side of the piano.
