SketchToHandle

SketchToHandle - open-source assistive technology working model by the Cornell Tech community

The challenge

It provides a modular, tool-free handle for users with limited grip strength or dexterity. Instead of permanent glue, it generates a custom assembly that clamps onto various cups using their own taper.

Who it helps

Users with limited grip strength or dexterity, such as elderly individuals or those with arthritis, who need a modular, tool-free cup handle system to hold their beverages securely.

How it works

It gives users with limited grip strength a tool-free way to hold beverages securely. The custom 3D-printed assembly relies on the cup's natural geometry instead of adhesives, allowing users to easily attach the handle while fully supporting the load

We built a web app taking a cup photo and a 2D sketch to generate a modular, 3D-printable handle. It creates a two-piece system (adjustable top ring, bottom platform) that securely clamps onto the cup using its natural taper, completely adhesive-free
