The current prototype can be hung on door knobs to prop open the door while the person in the wheelchair backs up and travels through the door. A second prototype is being developed, it allows the person in the wheelchair to open and move through a door that opens towards them. The ultimate goal is to combine both functions into a single device that is convenient to carry at all times.
Most buildings are not equipped with automatic door openers. While this offers the ideal solution for for people in wheelchairs, it is not widely available and would be expensive and impractical to add to many locations. Instead, an easier way for people in wheelchairs to travel through doors would help make them more independent.
The need-knower, Vera Aitemon, works at a place that doesn't have automatic door openers. Because of her Cerebral Palsy, she uses an electric wheelchair. The right side of her body is affected by CP, causing her to mainly use her left hand. She would like to be able to open doors by herself without having to rely on other people for assistance.
