Z Stretch, Therapy for Children with SMA

Z Stretch, Therapy for Children with SMA - open-source assistive technology working model by the 2021 TOM Global Innovation Challenge (GIC) community

About this project

One in 6000 to 10000 children suffer from SMA. Our challenge is to add a mechanical device to daily rehab routines for Zorica. Her active movements are non-existing or very limited (flickers). This device could help children with all 4 SMA types.

One of the daily rehab tasks is to keep ROM of all of the joints, to prevent development of painful joint contracture and to enhance any ability for active motion. That is time consuming. Any gadget/device that can help with it is more than welcomed.

To meet the challenge we are thinking of creating a mechanical frame similar to CPM but lighter. The gadget should support her legs in order to improve passive ROM, and encourage her to work with it to improve her muscle strength as much as possible.

Who it helps

Our Need-Knower is Ljiljana Dragojlovic, mom of 6 year old

Zorica, who is diagnosed with SMA type I. She is on a

respirator and she is fed through a peg. She uses TOBI for

entertainment and learns how to communicate with it.

How it works

Z Stretch - Therapy for Children with SMA is one of the participating projects of the 2021 Global Innovation Challenge.
