Steady Rider

Steady Rider - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Vanderbilt University community

The challenge

This project empowers kids like Kade to independently enjoy activities like riding bikes, promoting confidence and inclusion in everyday childhood experiences.

Who it helps

Kade is a nine-year-old boy with a condition that stunts his physical development and causes balance impairments. He loves going outside, and would like to gain more independence. The Steady Rider allows Kade to pedal his four-wheeler independently.

How it works

Our modifications improve security and adaptability for Kade. A seatbelt boosts safety, and the adjustable pedals support balance and growth, ensuring the bike can grow with him until he’s ready for a traditional bicycle.

We altered a four-wheeler to accommodate Kade’s needs. Specifically, we adapted the pedals, added a handle on the back of the vehicle, and attached a seatbelt.
