WheelieDesk

WheelieDesk - open-source assistive technology concept by the Sabancı University community

The challenge

The project is needed because the child’s current wheelchair limits access to classroom desks and affects her posture and mobility. The family has also struggled to find a suitable school-use solution in Turkey.

Who it helps

The primary user is a 6-year-old wheelchair user who needs greater independence and easier access to desks and tables in her classroom. The solution may also benefit other children with similar wheelchair needs.

How it works

The solution will allow the child to approach desks more easily, improve armrest usability and sitting posture, and maintain independent mobility, making classroom activities more accessible and comfortable. Also, can be used in the kitchen.

We propose a modular attachment for the existing wheelchair that improves desk access, armrest usability, and postural support, while preserving the child’s independent mobility.
