Activate Arm

Activate Arm - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Melbourne community

The challenge

Aidan's right hand is difficult to use. Some of the muscles are difficult to communicate with. This leads to him favouring his left hand. Exercising and using his right hand more would increase his autonomy, his capabilities and promote healthy growth.

Who it helps

Aidan is 10 years old and has hemiplegic cerebral palsy affecting the right side of his body. He enjoys gaming, animation, anime, comedy and martial arts.

How it works

Occupational therapist, Sue Berres, identified the loose, inactive wrist as the main barrier to hand use for Aidan. The elastic supports wrist extension. Inspired by Aidan's ideas for a cyborg arm, the electronics add new reasons to engage the arm.

An elastic-powered wearable to support the hand in a functional position, enabling hand and finger use. The wearable also features electronics that activate in response to motion, giving the arm new powers and reasons to move.
